Aruna Vasudev (1 Nov 1936 - 5 Sept 2024)

EVER SMILING FACE, EVEN IN ANGER, AN INSTITUTION BUILDER, ‘MOTHER OF ASIAN CINEMA’ & A GREAT TEACHER BIDDING ADIEU
ON TEACHERS’ DAY – 5 SEPTEMBER 2024

When she was 85, she was still active, painting and dreaming of doing many more projects. She launched the first journal dedicated to Asian cinema, ‘Cnemaya, ’ way back in 1988; she launched the festival of Asian cinema in the 1990s; and she founded the internationally renowned NETPAC, an organization to further the cause of Asian cinema. She was awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards in Italy, Korea, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, et al.

I was privileged to work with her first at the Cinefan film festival and then Osian’s Cinefan film festival in Delhi, besides Osianama. She invited me to write a book on Sohrab Modi for a series that included books on Guru Dutt (Rashmi Doraiswamy), P.C. Barua (Shoma A. Chatterji), Sivaji Ganesan (S. Theodore Baskaran), Shammi Kapoor (Deepa Gahlot) and Mehboob Khan (Rauf Ahmed). Published by Wisdom Tree, Aruna Vasudev was its Series (The Legends of Indian Cinema) editor. She also invited me to write for yet another significant book “Frames of Mind: Reflections on Indian Cinema” she edited.

Our salaam to you dear Aruna… B-90 Defence Colony in New Delhi will still buzz with many memories you have left behind….
